October 24, 2009: Today’s show felt good and we covered a lot of issues. I began with updates on stories I have been following. I talked about the tax amnesty deadline of October 15, 2009 for those who have offshore accounts for the purpose of tax evasion. I also talked about fraud that was found in the first time home buyers assistance program.
Aren’t you glad we now have intelligent people in government who understands the “trust” aspect of trust but verify? It seems that for eight years under the Bush Administration there was a lot of trust and nearly no verify. We are now experiencing the consequences of the Bush Administration policy of trust but no verify in finance and banking, in defense, in the Department of the Interior, the FDA, the EPA, etc., etc. the list is almost endless and it outlines the challenged faced by the Obama Administration.
Existing home sales spiked in September of ‘09 to its highest level in two years. I do not doubt that this is the result of the Obama Administration’s assistance for first time home buyers. We hope the program will continue and eliminating waste and fraud in the program will continue to ensure its success. I know that my friends in the home repair and home improvement business are getting lots of good contracts and they are working. My friends in the mortgage industry are doing well also. My neighbor, who is in real estate, is having one of her best years ever in existing home sales. The program is working and restoring trust in the system by going after the bad actors is essential.
I talked about the recent push for offshore drilling in Florida. It is clear that by looking at past performance, it just is not worth the risk to our tourism industry, our fishing industry, and our pristine beaches. Looking at the Minerals Management Service maps of lease grids in the Gulf of Mexico where activity is happening, it is very clear that Florida must not risk the horrifying consequences of allowing offshore drilling close to our shores. I talked about all of the oil spills, hurricane damaged platforms and pipelines, and “dead zones” in the Gulf where wildlife is struggling as a direct result of drilling off of Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas.
We moved on to talk about the global day of action coordinated by 350.org. 350 parts-per-million of greenhouse gasses is the number that all scientists agree on. It cannot go over 350 parts-per-million or we risk devastating effects of global climate change. Florida lies low on the horizon and just a few inches of sea level rise will have terrible effects on all Floridians. We will be ruined – wiped out, by rising sea levels and oil industry contamination unless we push back against the powerful energy lobbying interests who have hijacked our state government.
I gave an update of activities for the upcoming vigil to close The School Of The Americas at Fort Benning, Georgia. The entertainment line-up has been released and I talked about lodging and the ride boards set up by the School Of The Americas Watch along with many other ways that citizens can help. Personally, I am tired of seeing the good name of America dragged through the mud by this facility and its graduates and it is way past time to shut it down.
I always encourage Floridians to get outside and enjoy this paradise we are so blessed to live in. As a fifth generation native to the NE Florida area, I have witnessed pristine areas being destroyed for development and I am tired of it. I am convinced that the more people get out there and discover Florida, the better chance we will have of returning to a sustainable growth policy. Growth in Florida has been out of control for over 30 years and it is time to start thinking smarter about development. For a start, please visit the Jacksonville Arboretum.
